Sosua
Sosua in the Dominican Republic is considered by some to be the “Acapulco of the Dominican Republic”. Situated on the northern coast of this beautiful Caribbean country it is within easy reach of several other popular resorts, for example Cabarete and Puerto Plata, making it an ideal location to live or to enjoy a holiday. Sosua became popular during the 1970’s as a wonderful tropical holiday spot for foreign visitors from around the world, and it still attracts thousands of holidaymakers today.
Sosua is home to over 2,000 hotel rooms, many being “all inclusive resorts”, as well as smaller charming hotels. Over the years many visitors have been so impressed by the area that they have bought a holiday villa or apartment, so that they can return year after year to enjoy all that this area has to offer, as well as those who have chosen to live permanently in this idyllic part of the Dominican Republic.
The close proximity of the Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperón International Airport with both charter and regular flights to world wide destinations has encouraged many people to choose this part of the country as their home. This has encouraged a wide range of new developments so that now you will find a whole range of properties available in this area ranging from condo apartments to large mansion properties set in extensive grounds and valued at millions of dollars.
Many people that choose Sosua as a holiday centre come to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. Swimming is safe in this area with the sea generally calm and snorkelling along the coral reef allows a glimpse of the marine life who call this area home including parrot fish, grouper, and flounder. Those who enjoy scuba diving can head either east or west to explore shipwrecks, cave diving or, for the more experienced, deep water dives. Snorkelling can be enjoyed from the beach all the way out to the coral reef and, for the less adventurous, there is still the opportunity to view and feed the smaller fish that swim closer inshore and can be easily seen through the crystal clear water.
In addition to beach and water activities you can also enjoy various organised trips such as safari jeep rides, horseback riding, and visits to nearby towns on the northern coasts such as Cabarete and Puerto Plata. Or you can hire a car from the airport and explore the area at your leisure. Other places you may want to see whilst you are in Sosua could include a visit to the Amber Museum, or to the Botanical Gardens on Isabela de Torres Mountain.

Sosua night life is one that attracts singles and the young at heart. The Sosua beach bars have a more open feel than you might find in the clubs in the resort. The enjoyment of dancing under the stars while having a few drinks on the white sandy beach is something to always remember. However, if you enjoy the club scene, more than a romantic beach bar, there are plenty to choose from and you will find many offering some of the most well known Dominican music for you to dance the night away to until the wee small hours of the morning. If you are feeling lucky the Sosua Casino is also close by where you can try your hand at all the well known games of chance.
Your visit to Sosua can be as calm and relaxing as you wish by lounging around the resort pools or on the beach or as adventurous as you desire with the safari’s and other activities. One thing for sure is that if you don’t decide to stay here permanently you will take home memories of the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic you will never forget.
